What is Artificial Intelligence (AI) ?
The intelligence demonstrated by machines and technology, in contrast to intelligence demonstrated by human behaviour. AI is “a system’s ability to correctly interpret external data, to learn from such data, and to use those learnings to achieve specific goals and tasks through flexible adaptation” , JISC 2024
Artificial intelligence is at the forefront of a changing landscape in tertiary education. From personalised learning pathways to automated administrative tasks, AI promises to redefine teaching and learning for learners and practitioners alike. But harnessing the full potential of AI isn’t without its challenges – both ethical and technological – which need careful navigation.
This page provides a non-exhaustive list of resources about AI currently available to CSM staff and students. It aims to help everyone to engage with and explore Artificial Intelligence in Education.
Existing resources for staff and students at UAL
- UAL’s Community of practice open to all staff in MS Teams – it focuses on teaching and academic practice, ethical concerns in relation to AI, etc. A good place to find out about upcoming events with announcements and sharing of resources.
- LCC have created a list of AI tools embedded in existing UAL platforms and tools and a basic guide on how to access them. They include Miro, Padlet, Moodle and others.
- CSM Library have created a reading list about AI for students and staff available here for signposting. If you want to contribute please get in touch.
- AI in Arts Education Resource Hub – the UAL AI hub page has links to the resources currently available to staff and to students:
Upcoming resources and events
- CSM Digital learning team is organising a panel discussion about AI in Education on the 28th March 2025 as part of their staff development programme.
- A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about AI is due to be published by UAL very soon. The resource will focus on providing practical advice responding to concrete issues encountered by teaching staff: does UAL provide a generative AI which is safe to use, what to do if you suspect your students are using AI unethically, etc.
- A UAL wide Practice sharing event on AI in partnership with The Council for Higher Education in Art & Design (CHEAD) is scheduled to take place online on the 18th June 2025. A call for presentation is due to go out soon.
