Large File Submission option in Moodle

A Large File Submission option is now available within the Moodle Assignment activity. This provides a simpler and more secure way for students to submit assessment files that are too large for the standard Moodle file limit.

The new option supports individual files of up to 4GB, meaning that students who have previously needed to use SharePoint for larger assessment submissions  (over 1 Gb) will now be able to submit directly through Moodle.

Please note that best practises regarding file optimization still applies and students continue to be encouraged to upload the minimum file size.

What does this mean for staff and students?

The new solution is designed to make the submission process easier, safer and better integrated with Moodle.

For staff, setting up a large-file submission is straightforward and can be done directly when creating an Assignment. There is no need to create and manage a separate SharePoint submission area.

For students, the submission process remains within Moodle, providing a more familiar and consistent experience.

Importantly, keeping submissions within Moodle also means that teachers and external examiners can access assessment submissions directly through Moodle, without having to log in to SharePoint.

Key benefits

  • Up to 4GB per file can be submitted.
  • The process is simpler for both staff and students.
  • Students can submit their work directly through Moodle.
  • No separate SharePoint submission is needed to be created or managed.
  • Teachers and external examiners can access submissions through Moodle.
  • Submissions are kept within the Moodle assessment workflow, providing a more secure and consistent approach.
  • Large files can be uploaded as a single file. Where an assessment contains multiple files, these can be packaged into a ZIP file before uploading.

What is happening with SharePoint submissions?

The use of SharePoint for assessment submissions is being discontinued.

The new Large File Submission option is particularly intended as an alternative for those who have been using SharePoint because their assessment files exceeded Moodle’s previous 1GB limit.

How to set up a Large File Submission

Please note: For files that can be submitted using Moodle’s standard Assignment functionality (under 1Gb), the normal submission options should continue to be used.

For submissions with a file (or a combination of files) that will likely be above 1Gb, please follow this advice:

  • When creating or editing a Moodle Assignment, go to the Submission types section.
  • Under the available submission options, select:  Large file submission

Once selected, the Assignment will be configured to accept files of up to 4GB.

Important! one file only

Students’ submissions must be uploaded as a single file.

If students need to submit several files, they can combine them into a ZIP folder and upload it as a single submission.

Resubmissions

If a student needs to replace their submission, they can return to the Assignment submission point. They will be able to remove their current submission and upload a new file.
